Keyword research is essential not only to improve your own strategy, but also to identify content gaps.\n<h2>1. Identify your real competitors<\/h2>\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>Online \u2260 real life:<\/strong> Physical business competitors are not necessarily the same as your organic search rivals.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Service areas:<\/strong> Different services (e.g. webshop vs blog) have different competition.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Stop guessing:<\/strong> Identify who you share search results with based on real data, not just assumptions.<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Be realistic:<\/strong> If you're a small brand, don't try to compete directly with giants like Amazon - look for players of a similar size.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>2. Use tools to map your competitors<\/h2>\nA good tool will allow you to separately check competitors at domain, subdomain or folder (e.g. \/blog\/) level. This helps you to distinguish, for example, if your webshop's competition is different from your blog's.\n<ul>\n \t<li>Examine the <strong>Domain Authority (DA)<\/strong> value - choose sites of similar strength for comparison.<\/li>\n \t<li>Watch the <strong>Overlap<\/strong> ratio - how many common keywords they competed for.<\/li>\n \t<li>A <strong>Rivalry<\/strong> indicator helps to rank the most important competitors.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>3. Find out what you rank higher than you<\/h2>\nA keyword spacer will show you which keywords you can move forward on. Discover new keyword opportunities<\/h2>\nSee which keywords your competitors are ranking for, but you're not. These are the \"content gaps\" you should fill.\n<ul>\n \t<li>Create new content for them (e.g. new product page, FAQ, blog post).<\/li>\n \t<li>Update existing pages to be optimised for these terms.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>5. Also check the content on the page level<\/h2>\nSometimes you are not competing with the whole domain, but only with certain sub-sites. Use a tool to analyse keywords for specific URLs or subdomains.\n<ul>\n \t<li>Use the \"Explore by Site\" feature to explore the subpages.<\/li>\n \t<li>To save, add the keywords to a list so you can track them later.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>6. Analyse the competitor's content<\/h2>\n<ul>\n \t<li><strong>Keyword use:<\/strong> Where and how are keywords used? Variations?<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Quality of content:<\/strong> Is it well written? Does it have video, infographics, other visual elements?<\/li>\n \t<li><strong>Gaps:<\/strong> What are they not writing about? You can include this in your own content to get ahead of them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Summary<\/h2>\nMapping your competitors' keywords is not just about jockeying for position - it's also about finding new ideas and content opportunities.
